On the Road (August 1, 2007)

Part of the start up experience is building awareness of your products and services within your industry, and participating in events is one way to accomplish this objective. Conferences that are well attended by the right audience also provide a great opportunity to learn from others and to cultivate and extend business relationships.

Over the past several months, we've been making the rounds. In mid-April, our Founder and CEO Josh Herst provided a business and product update to a group of industry analysts at the Forrester Research Web 2.0 Briefing Day in Foster City. Josh was one of several CEOs invited to discuss Web 2.0 trends and technologies - an excellent opportunity given Forrester Research's long time leadership as an independent technology and market research company.

At the end of April, TripHub's VP Marketing John Pope presented at Microsoft's Mix07 in Las Vegas. John was invited to speak at this conference, billed as the "conference for Web designers, developers and decision-makers who make their living at the forefront of the consumer Web," to discuss how TripHub used the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform to create TripHub's Trip Maps. The Trip Map feature is one our latest service additions and is described in more detail in our tour.

Two weeks later, John presented at the Eye for Travel Sales and Marketing in Travel Conference in Miami. The topic was measuring the ROI of content strategy and it proved to be one of the more popular sessions at the conference. In advance of the conference, the Eye for Travel editorial team interviewed John on the subject of content. You can read that interview here.

In early June, John attended the ATME 2007 Travel and Marketing Conference at the posh Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas (we're beginning to wonder why John gets to take all these trips to sunny destinations!).

So what's next? Look for TripHub in mid-November at the PhoCusWright Conference 2007 in Orlando where Josh will join a select group of speakers on a roundtable discussion following a presentation by Steve Barnhart, President & CEO of Orbitz Worldwide. (Hmmm... Orlando in November. I wonder if John will get to go... ;-)

Updates to Privacy Policy and Terms of Service (April 24, 2007)

We have made a couple of changes to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service that specifically apply to customers who register with TripHub through private-label sites that TripHub operates on behalf of third parties (for example, People to People Student Ambassador Programs). If you register with TripHub through a private-label site, TripHub may share your registration information including your email address with the third party under whose brand you registered. In addition, we have added language specifying that for certain private-label sites operated by TripHub with parental consent procedures in place, parental consent will constitute legal authority for customers under 18 years of age to use TripHub's services. Finally, associated with this addition, we have provided the ability for the parents of minors to request that TripHub deactivate the accounts of their children.

Who's on first, What's on second - Introducing Trip Maps (March 23, 2007)

Which way?Like Abbott and Costello's famous routine, getting everyone on a trip or attending an event to the right place at the right time can be a challenging (not to mention stressful and time consuming!) communication experience.

I remember my wedding weekend well... We had friends and family staying at several hotels in various different areas and had to make sure everyone knew how to get from where they were staying to the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception and a brunch for out of town guests (all at different locations). Moreover many people had questions about where to eat and what to do while in town.

TripHub's New Trip Maps makes this experience easier. Trip Maps integrates all your group's lodgings (whether folks are staying at a downtown hotel, neighborhood B&B, or cousin Suzie's house) and events (restaurants, parks, celebrations) in a single view and makes it easy to get directions between any two points. Trip Maps also make it easy to find nearby dining and attractions and to add these to your shared Event Schedule.

So, whether you're traveling to Peoria, Arizona to see your favorite team play in Spring Training, or Peoria, Illinois for a family reunion this summer, Trip Maps can help you to get your group to the right place at the right time!

You may also notice that we built Trip Maps with Microsoft's Virtual Earth platform. Reviewing our team's resumes you might think it's a given that a bunch of ex-Microsofties would choose Virtual Earth, but there's more to it than that. Our crack development team (led by Chris Kinsella) evaluated several mapping platforms, including Google Maps, and determined that Virtual Earth's feature set (for example, intelligent automatic zoom level when geocoding and bird's eye view imagery), along with better worldwide coverage (roughly 30% of TripHub's customers are planning trips outside the U.S.), made it the right choice for us.

Groups and Meetings: A New Perspective Reveals Unexpected Opportunity (January 24, 2007)

The PhoCusWright report referenced in our November 2006 post titled A Look at TripHub Groups, is now available.  It's a very good study and worth checking out.  Below is a summary of PhoCusWright's findings which are consistent with TripHub's experience.

From PhoCusWright's January 24th FYI Newsletter:

Companies seeking the next big travel opportunity need to explore the groups and meetings arena. This complex but steady marketplace, valued at over US$164 billion in the U.S. alone, is one of the next frontiers and key competitive areas for e-commerce and one of the last major revenue streams to move online.

The U.S. groups and meetings marketplace is projected to reach $175 billion by 2008, with travel (air, hotel, car rental, ground transportation, cruise and tour) representing 54% of the total. Non-travel expenses (e.g., meeting rooms, catering, audio/visual equipment) represent the remaining 46%. By 2008, 41% of all groups and meetings travel revenue, or $39 billion, will be booked online. The online opportunity will be even greater for small leisure gatherings (under 9 rooms), a segment which has fallen outside of the traditional "group" definition. [Ed: see TripHub's definition.] This segment, which includes family reunions, weddings and religious groups, will have online penetration of 53% by 2008, nearly three times the rate of larger leisure groups.

Travel companies can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines taking a wait-and-see approach to the groups and meetings opportunity, according to the report. Suppliers need to automate their entire distribution network and supply chain supporting groups and meetings or else risk ceding control of this space to competitors and/or new entrants. Groups and meeting inventory and rates must be centralized and well integrated into other core systems, including hotel property management, revenue (yield) management, central reservations, customer relationship management, e-commerce and dynamic packaging. In addition, companies should apply Travel 2.0 capabilities to the groups and meetings arena, placing particular emphasis on the elements of community, user-generated content and social networking.

Innovation by new entrants and competitive posturing by other, more established players signify that this will be an exciting area poised for great opportunity and technology advances in the years to come.

Other Key Findings:

  • Smaller, simpler groups and meetings are on the rise in both the leisure and corporate segments. Because these tend to have fewer variables, they can be moved online with the entire business being transacted - from contract to bookings - without the need for a request for proposal.

  • Hotel companies are working to centralize their groups and meetings inventory and rates to enhance offerings and leverage/optimize resources to achieve efficiencies and economies of scale. As they build their technology capabilities, they will push supply online.

  • Components of large meetings (e.g., RFP processing, housing management, attendee registration) will continue to move online largely to achieve efficiencies and to empower or off-load tasks to planners and attendees.

  • The rise in new market entrants (e.g., Groople, Group Travel Planet, TripHub) and efforts by established players to automate portions of the groups and meetings lifecycle will help to draw attention to the technology tools, educate the marketplace and encourage people to book electronically online.

    A Look at TripHub Groups (November 21, 2006)

    Last week, TripHub participated in a roundtable discussion on the groups and meetings market at the PhoCusWright Executive Conference in Los Angeles. This session resulted in a lively discussion about group travel.  As a follow up, we thought we would share more of what we have learned about group customers since launching TripHub earlier this year.

    To begin, it's a big market! TripHub estimates that roughly 1 in 5 leisure trips is a group trip. What defines a group trip? TripHub's customers represent a diverse audience planning everything from multi-generational family vacations and reunions, to golf, ski and spa getaways with friends, to celebrations (milestone birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, bachelor/ette parties), to soccer tournaments and other trips with their clubs and teams.

    The majority of group trips include fewer than 10 travelers. TripHub has been at the forefront of re-defining the group travel market. Historically, the industry has defined "groups" as 10 or more people traveling on the same itinerary. TripHub extends this definition to include any trip outside a nuclear family – if it involves more than one credit card, it's a group! This broader definition encompasses the traditional definition of groups as well as smaller groups of family and friends and larger groups traveling on disparate itineraries (group members frequently travel from multiple origination cities or stay at different facilities when attending events).

    Groups plan in advance. In fact, 65% of TripHub's customers are planning their trips over 2 months in advance and roughly 40% are planning 4+ months in advance! Underscoring the difference between group and non-group travel, according to comScore Networks, 75% of U.S. consumers begin their leisure travel planning within just eight weeks of departure. TripHub customers are returning to the site throughout the planning cycle to discuss their plans, make group decisions and coordinate travel details with TripHub's trip blogs and event schedules.

    Consistent with broader travel industry trends, the majority of TripHub customers are planning shorter trips. Almost two thirds of TripHub customers are planning weekend or long weekend trips.  Roughly 10% (the lucky few!) are planning extended vacations of 2 weeks or longer.

    It's also fun to see where customers are traveling. TripHub groups go everywhere! While the majority of customers are traveling domestically in the U.S., almost 30% of TripHub customers are traveling abroad with quite a few heading off the beaten path to Africa, Asia and the Middle East. And while it's not surprising that Las Vegas is our top destination, in the months since launch, TripHub customers have planned trips to 48 states plus Washington DC.

    We hope this data provides some insight into the leisure group travel market and how customers are using TripHub today.

    We recently partnered with PhoCusWright on their in-depth study of the groups and meetings market. This research, titled Groups and Meetings: Market Opportunity Redefined, will provide detailed insights into online consumer behavior and trends in the group travel market. We look forward to this report being published and suspect that it may serve as a wake up call to the industry with regard to the group travel opportunity.

    More Ways to Share & Promote Trips (November 1, 2006)

    You may have noticed recent changes to TripHub. We wanted to provide some detail about these enhancements and encourage you to give them a try.

    A URL For Every Trip

    You and your trip members can now share your trip via a unique trip URL. This trip URL can be sent in an email, posted on a Web site, or published in an offline flyer, newsletter, or invitation. This makes promoting trips easier and eliminates the need to know everyone's e-mail address.

    New Advanced Settings

    TripHub's new advanced trip settings give you even more control over who can access the details of your trip. You can still restrict access to only invited guests or you can now allow anyone who receives or finds the trip URL to see the trip details. We have also introduced new options that allow people to request an invitation to your trip (subject to your approval) and for people to simply add themselves to the trip.

    Email Notifications

    Trip Blogs and Event Schedules now include optional e-mail notifications to help keep your group informed of changes throughout the planning process.

    Many of these changes were based on your feedback and all are designed to eliminate two of the most significant challenges experienced in planning group travel - sharing trip details and keeping everyone informed. You will find these improvements particularly relevant for your clubs, teams, religious organizations, and school groups.

    Finally, you will notice more advertising on the site. TripHub is free to use. But we hope you'll consider buying from our advertising partners. We choose them carefully and work hard to make the offers relevant to you.

    Our team is excited to launch several new features and service updates today. You’ve been sharing feedback, and we’ve been listening. Here’s a sampling of what you told us and what we’ve done about it:

    With TripHub Event Schedules you can now add daily events and activities including dining plans, tours and attractions, and meeting times and places to your trip.     TripHub Trip Blogs create a central place for discussions, announcements, lists, idea sharing, and decision making, within the context of your private trip. Anyone in your group can start a discussion, and you can now post a copy of messages sent to the group via email to the Trip Blog to maintain a single repository of all communications. The Trip Blog RSS feed will help you keep track of Trip Blog activity via MyYahoo! or your favorite RSS reader. And of course you can use Trip Blogs to share memories post travel too. Check it out!

    We have updated the design of the Trip Home Page to make it easier to find all of your trip information as well as to keep track of the most recently added discussions, events, and comments. Check it out!

    Travel 2.0 Confronts the Establishment (June 14, 2006)

    In his email announcing this year's PhoCusWright Executive Conference, industry insider, analyst and pundit, Philip Wolf commented that the "current marketplace activity represents the most exciting time that I have witnessed since the first online travel wave hit. It's pregnant with potential. One reason is that travel distribution evolution is inextricably linked with the fantastic advancements in software and Web applications. Another is that we are reaching a tipping point where 50% of all U.S. travel will be booked online and international growth is explosive. My favorite thing underway is the many new entrants challenging the very 1.0 companies who themselves challenged the status quo a generation ago."

    Never mind that the Travel 1.0 generation lasted a mere decade (consider the amazing changes in the industry since the launch of Travelocity and Expedia in 1996 -- Anyone out there remember Preview Travel let alone PCTravel, TheTrip, BizTravel and ITN?)  PhoCusWright is the leading online travel conference, and TripHub is pleased to be speaking at this year's event and representing the Travel 2.0 wave in a session devoted to the growing online group travel market.

    We agree with Philip that it's fun to see so many innovative online travel companies emerging. And, as John Cook commented in his blog "it is kind of interesting how Seattle has shaped the online travel industry... In addition to Expedia, a number of online travel startups got started in Seattle. Maybe it is the rainy weather." Of related interest is John's recent post on the greater concentration of start ups in Seattle as compared to most large cities.

    My current count of private Seattle-based online travel companies is 7, including TripHub (and I expect others to emerge). Please let me know who I'm missing on this list.

  • Yapta launched their beta. Yapta enables customers to tag specific flights/itineraries found at leading airline and online travel agent sites and then mointors pricing and sends email updates when fares drop or fall below a desired spending limit (May 2007).
  • Other interesting Northwest-based online travel companies include FlightStats, MyItin, Destination360, and HolidayGolightly.
